Reflection
A factor that may have benefited our team and project would have been beginning our recycle awareness process earlier. It wasn’t until we started to take action that we realized how time consuming it would be. Despite our slow beginning, we managed to learn, time, and plan our methods in making our mission efficient.
What had mostly consumed our time in the first stages of our process was working with our district. As much as our district tried, it was still difficult to schedule and contact our superintendent or maintenance team. Starting our project earlier possibly would have given us more time to expand on our goals and give us the opportunity to share the aftermath of our small success.
Getting student attention was an obstacle, but one that we overcame by having in class presentations, giveaways, and competitions. Having students get on their phone and follow us on our social medias was a challenge and still is but we do notice that they are more open to participating in our hands on activities.
Our lunchtime activities were always a success, and students enjoyed competing for our prizes which were candies and a reusable bottle. These activities consisted of our 30 second water bottle challenge, in which the participants had thirty seconds to crush and recycle as many water bottles as they could. We also gave the opportunity to our peers to be part of our team by having them pledge to recycle on campus and at home.
Our most major accomplishment was the installation of our bottle refill stations. However with this major step came an important question, who would make sure that these stations and recycling bins would be kept maintained and implemented throughout our district? Having a refill station immediately makes our mission a long term impact, which calls for a long term plan. As a team we sat down with our adviser and created a three year plan in which we decided that our “Olys Crushing It” name would branch out into being it’s own club and possibly even be passed down to our ecology club. In addition,we took the liberty of recruiting members for Olys Crushing It and the future Girls Build L.A. team. In summation, our three year plan consists of how the future team could continue the mission, where else they could impact, how they can then efficiently make that impact, and overall keep the stations clean, and presentable.
Even though we had a refill station installed in our school, some students still do prefer bringing plastic water bottles or just aren’t able to get a reusable one. Moreover, we fixed this predicament by purchasing recycling bins from the Big Bottle Recycling Company for students who still use plastic bottles.
As we first began to plan and research methods to get recycling bins and a refill station we came across Coca Cola's America is Beautiful grant and applied for it. Unfortunately, we did not receive this grant, but still made attempts to get donations from other trash/recycling companies such as Athens.
