Project Need and Research
Our main goal for this project was to spread awareness to our students and community regarding the positive affects of recycling plastic waste. Not only did we want to spread awareness, but we also wanted to implement the habit and practice of recycling, which aligns with our impact area of civic engagement and leadership. To help do so we provided bottle waste boxes to encourage our on campus and off campus community to recycle.
The installation of our filtered water bottle refill station was meant to help decrease the amount of plastic bottles used. It's installment was an asset to students and families by making water more affordable. The counter on the machine shows that students have been refilling their bottles daily. Our impact can also be seen in the interest of after school sport teams and how they often feel more at ease knowing that they could look to the refill station for cold fresh water.
Using our own knowledge and talking to parents and students who attended other schools in the Bassett Unified School District, we came to the conclusion that there was no recycling system implemented at any of the schools in our community. Recyclables were either thrown in the trash, shoved in fences and bushes, or just plain abandoned on a table or curb. Our community was littering and it was everywhere. For that reason we chose recycling as our mission, especially because we wanted to keep our home clean and presentable. What also helped us come to this conclusion was our beginning project surveys , some people stated that they had no interest in recycling. This meant it had originally not mattered to them, but that has now changed since we took action.
