Process
During the year, our team consisted of ten girls whom each had a specific job such as media management, event planning, website coordinator, and more. As a team we would meet up every Wednesday at lunch, after school, and occasionally on Fridays in our advisers class room located in the English department. In our meetings, among ourselves we discussed our next steps, brainstormed, and created a to do list. After planning out our mission , we would all break off into our separate mini committees. That same Friday or the following Wednesday we would meet again to report back on what we did so far, and how we could have done it better for the following week.
The first couple of weeks that we were commencing our mission we focused on the more time consuming things such as researching quotes and scheduling meeting with our maintenance team for our recycling bins, and refill stations. Meanwhile, we scouted our campus for appropriate locations for our water refill station and recycling bins. Our second main focus was advertising and spreading our message to our peers. To efficiently advertise our mission and reason for the implementation of our recycling bins and refill stations we had in class presentations, lunchtime activities, and social media raffles.
Our events consisted of lunchtime activities where we would play games that brought recycle awareness of plastic waste to students on campus. Another lunchtime activity we held encouraged our students to pledge to support girls build LA in our mission to recycle on campus and at home. All students whom participated in our events were awarded. Peers, specifically girls, became inspired and wished to be part of the Girls Build LA program the following next year after they saw our accomplishments. When we noticed their interest, we hosted a meeting for them to talk about what Girls Build LA was and responsibilities they would be taking on.
